Sewer & Water Line Services in James City County, VA

In James City County, VA, many older homes still have lead water lines and Orangeburg sewer lines that have been in the ground for decades. These outdated materials are prone to corrosion, cracking, and leaks, especially in the area’s sandy, moisture-rich soils. Over time, shifting ground and aging materials can lead to costly damage.

I can't say enough about Jamie from A1 Sewer & Drain. Give this man a raise immediately. Earlier in the week we had to do a sewage pipe repair, he did an awesome job and finished by the end of the day. Very communicative about everything that he was doing. A few days later, we had a water line leak that started filling the newly dug trench with water. (possibly because the inspector had slipped into the hole earlier) We called A1 and surprisingly although he wasn't working that late, he came anyway. In about 30 degree weather with a short sleeve t-shirt on, he was lying in the mud on his belly fixing the problem. I felt so bad that he had to do that but he said he just wanted to make sure we had water. A+ guy. Give him a promotion!!

Causes of Sewer & Water Line Problems in James City County, VA

James City County’s combination of clay-heavy and sandy soils creates constant underground movement, which can stress buried lines. Over time, lead water pipes can corrode or leach harmful metals into the water supply, creating serious health risks for your household, especially for children and pregnant women. Meanwhile, Orangeburg sewer lines can crack or collapse under soil pressure and root intrusion, leading to leaks. Preventive maintenance protects your home and your family’s health.

Keep in mind that anything within your property boundary is the homeowner’s responsibility, while the county maintains public lines beyond that point.

FAQs

When the soil under a pipe shifts or settles unevenly, a section can sag—creating a low spot that traps debris and slows flow.

Yes, over time lead pipes can corrode, allowing small amounts of lead to enter your drinking water. Even low exposure can pose health concerns, especially for children and pregnant women. Replacing old lines is the best long-term fix.
